Living underground: Edible Dormouse (Glis glis) activity in the underground shelters during the active period

چکیده

The Edible Dormouse ( Glis glis) uses different types of shelters at particular times the year. During hibernation, they are found in underground cavities or sometimes caves, while during active periods mostly use above-ground shelters: tree hollows nest boxes. Selection such thermally varied is result physiological requirements both and non-active periods, choosing a lower constant temperature hibernation higher mating, gestation, lactation. However, this species also observed outside hibernation. It possible that caves as alternative adverse weather conditions food shortages. We examined annual circadian activity G. glis two (Czestochowska Upland, southern Poland). Research was conducted for three years (2019 – 2021) using non-invasive method: camera-traps. evaluated climatic parameters inside availability main diet (beech seeds, Fagus sylvatica ). Our research indicates year-round presence caves. Dynamics their vary between seasons (masting vs non-masting), but similar sites within cave highest full masting season intermediate lowest mast failure Circadian phenological periods: from 24-hour beginning (mating period), to becoming exclusively nocturnal remaining period. These results may indicate that, apart being used regular daily shelter dormice.

Telomeres are elongated in older individuals in a hibernating rodent, the edible dormouse (Glis glis)

Telomere shortening is thought to be an important biomarker for life history traits such as lifespan and aging, and can be indicative of genome integrity, survival probability and the risk of cancer development. In humans and other animals, telomeres almost always shorten with age, with more rapid telomere attrition in short-lived species. Here, we show that in the edible dormouse (Glis glis) t...

BIOLOGY, DAMAGE AND CONTROL OF THE EDIBLE DORMOUSE (Glis glis L.) IN CENTRAL ITALY

The remarkable increase in the number of colonies of edible dormouse (Glis glis L.) registered in the litoranean industrial cultivations of Pinus pinea L. in northern Tuscany over the last ten years and the grave damage to the production of pine-seeds consequent on it has created the necessity of studying systems which may reduce the dormouse menace. Going on what has previously been discovered...

Isolation, characterization and PCR multiplexing of polymorphic microsatellite markers in the edible dormouse, Glis glis.

We isolated and characterized 10 dinucleotide microsatellite loci in the edible dormouse, Glis glis (Linnaeus). Four multiplex panels were developed. Loci were amplified in samples from two geographically distant populations (Torgny in Belgium and Montseny in Spain). All loci were polymorphic in Spain but four were monomorphic in Belgium. Individuals from Belgium and Spain exhibited an average ...

Telomere dynamics in free-living edible dormice (Glis glis): the impact of hibernation and food supply

We studied the impact of hibernation and food supply on relative telomere length (RTL), an indicator for aging and somatic maintenance, in free-living edible dormice. Small hibernators such as dormice have ∼50% higher maximum longevity than non-hibernators. Increased longevity could theoretically be due to prolonged torpor directly slowing cellular damage and RTL shortening. However, although m...
